Wicked Witch Cupcakes

I found these witch cupcakes here last year but I couldn't make them because I couldn't find black shoestring licorice anywhere!  This year I special ordered the licorice and then promptly found it in the Halloween aisle of Walmart!
Make a dozen of your favorite cupcakes.  I made chocolate using a mix.  While your cupcakes are cooling you can make the witch hats.  Microwave some baking chocolate for 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until completely melted.  Coat 12 sugar cones with the chocolate using a pastry brush and then place on waxed paper to set up.  While the hats are setting up, make your favorite buttercream frosting and then tint it green with a few drops of food coloring.
Generously frost the cupcakes.  Use a candy corn for a nose and two brown mini M&Ms for eyes as shown.  Cut two small pieces of the licorice and place above the M&Ms for eyebrows.  Be sure to angle them so the witch looks "wicked."  Cut some longer lengths of licorice and place on either side of the face.  Place the upside down chocolate-coated sugar cone above the face.
I think they are adorable.  I especially love how unruly their hair is!  Give them a try!

  5. So cute. I don't celebrate the "dark" side of Halloween but this could translate into Santa Claus or Elves for Christmas. Great idea.
