Yesterday was the last day of the term so today was a half-day without students. All of my essays and short story tests are graded, all scores are entered, and lessons for the second term are ready to go! I decided to celebrate by going to a movie this afternoon and I chose Cloud Atlas. Wow! This is an epic film with six different stories in various locations beginning in the nineteenth century and ending in a post-Apocalyptic future. The premise of the story is that we have a destiny to fulfill and a connection to another person which plays out again and again through time. All of the stories have a similar theme of fighting oppression, whether it is abolishing slavery or exposing a conspiracy about the safety of a nuclear reactor or a revolution against a totalitarian society, and the same actors portray characters in every story (often as different genders and races). The film is completely non-linear, deftly moving back and forth between time periods. Each narrative is featured just long enough to keep you completely engaged throughout the three hour movie. It is absolutely brilliant! I loved this movie because I am fascinated with the notion of reincarnation and I personally have a deep connection to someone that I am not entirely able to explain. However, I'm not sure that it is for everyone. People will either have a visceral response to it and want to see it again and again or they will find it completely preposterous and bewildering. Regardless, the film is certainly thought-provoking and will stay with you long after you leave the theater.
