Last night I took some of my students to work at a soup kitchen downtown. Of all the things I could be doing on a Friday night, I can't think of anything more rewarding than working with these amazing kids! We were working with another youth group who were obviously very wealthy and they were looking down their noses at us. What was even worse was that their adult leaders were the most disrespecful. It was obvious. It was blatant. It hurt. I was so upset I literally wanted to cry. I love working with these kids and I know how hard some of their lives are and yet they are all so willing to help people less fortunate than themselves. Some of them have over 100 hours of community service already this year! Instead of being upset my students quietly got to work. While the other group was talking, giggling, taking pictures, and arguing over who got to do what job, we had already formed an assembly line and started serving. My students were polite with all of the staff, compassionate with the people they were serving, and performed any job asked of them. I have never been more proud!
Hello! Following from the blog hop! Hope you follow back :)
ReplyDeleteHow fun and what a great experience! So sad the adult leaders had to behave that way, but I know you are proud of your students. Found your great blog from Sunday Funday. Your newest follower. :) I teach third grade, and we take our students to serve during Christmas. Always amazing.
